Black History Month with Books for Black Kids: (The Study of) Black History
On February 7th, 1926, Carter G. Woodson initiated the first celebration of Negro History Week. This evolved into Black History Month, which was established in 1970 in the United States.
While Black History Month has been a long-established tradition, the actual study of Black history in the classroom leaves much to be desired. Far beyond slavery and civil rights, Black history is a celebration of the work done across the diaspora to further Black wellness, scholarship, achievement, and more.
Therefore, this edition of “BHM with BFBK” will be dedicated not only to Black history itself, but to the pursuit of education in uplifting and strengthening Black youth.
“This crusade is much more important than the anti-lynching movement, because there would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom.”
— Carter G. Woodson, American historian, author, publisher and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History
