Black History Month with Books for Black Kids: Banned Books— Middle School, High School, and Beyond
This is the second edition of BHM with BFBK with banned books. PEN America has reported more than 10,000 book bans in public schools in the 2023-23 school year alone, 44% of which featured people of color. The books on this list all have Black authors, Black protagonists, and a focus on the Black/minority experience.
This list includes books from two articles on the Books for Black Kids website: 12 Banned Children’s Books by Black Authors (Middle School, Upper Elementary) and 34 Banned Books by Black Authors for High School, Young Adults, and Beyond.
